Funchal, Madeira, Portugal

Funchal, Madeira, Portugal  Sun, April 12, 2026

Larry and I drove bright and early from Encamp, Andorra to Barcelona, Spain. We boarded the MSC Poesia around noon. After two days at sea we landed in Funchal, Madeira.

We walked into the town of Funchal

After passing this sign, we were able to rent a scooter that was very close to the dock.

The Jacarandas are blooming. So beautiful against the cloudless sky.

Love the red tiled roofs against the blue ocean.

My man is happy to be getting some curves in on his scooter.

The curves were mighty fine.

Larry's phone shows them.

Our destination....Eira do Serrado.

What a cute birdhouse!

The red roofs were a big part of the dramatic scenery of Madeira.

Although it was windy, we enjoyed the top of the mountain.

This small village was created when women and children were seeking shelter during World War II. Men sent them deep into the mountains to keep them safe.

We hiked up a trail to the highest point for some awesome views.

The ride back down the mountain was fun.

Weeeee...what a curve!

The eucalyptus trees were fragrant.

Banana groves were everywhere on the valley’s of Madeira.

Bougainvillea was in full bloom

New homes had some fantastic ocean scenery.

                                                     Wildflowers were abundant.

Passing through mountain tunnels took away a lot of curves.

Terraced gardens covered the hillsides.

A great picnic spot

Madeira is known as the Flower Island of the Atlantic

The terraced hillsides are cultivated for crops

A very tropical island

                                                  Downtown  Funchal
After returning the scooter we walked back to the ship with big smiles. We had a fantastic ride on the island of Madeira.

The sail away was as romantic as could be. We enjoyed it from our balcony.
Five days crossing the Atlantic is pure bliss.

Next stop  Phillipsburg, Sint Maarten.
