Bosnia/Herzegovina, Croatia

Road trip  from Montenegro through Bosnia/Herzegovina and Croatia      April 18-19, 2023

After passing through the Montenegro immigration checkpoint into the Bosnia-Herzegovina Immigration checkpoint, Larry and I enjoyed the outstanding view of the Adriatic Sea that the Bosnians enjoy. Although the country is land locked, the high mountainside  provides a gorgeous scenic view of the seaside.

Croatia

After passing through the Bosnia/Herzegovina Immigration checkpoint and stopping at the Croatia Immigration checkpoint we drove into Dubrovnik. Historians are still not completely clear on the emergence of Dubrovnik as a settlement.
Some archaeological finds indicate that it is likely that the first settlement was formed in the 2nd  century as a fortified military camp  in the Roman Empire evidenced by the remains of a Roman-Byzantine basilica from about the 5th or 6th century. It can be estimated that Dubrovnik is over 1.600 years old.

Entering  into Dubrovnik, Croatia from Bosnia

We drove to a parking lot on top of the hill overlooking Old Town to park the car for the night.

We walked a maze of pathways and up about 1000 steps...oh my....

It was gorgeous but the steps turned into stairs.

We walked a maze of  pathways and finally found this dark narrow alley after talking with several people. Google maps was not much of a help in this menagerie of alleys and walkways.

We finally found it! Our airbnb for the night...called 7th Heaven.
On the outside it was old and crusty looking, but on the inside it was a renovated space of luxury.
After a long day of travel, it felt good to be in the Old City.

Our Airbnb Courtyard from on top of the great wall

After finding our Airbnb within the walled city, we found this beautiful setting sun over the Adriatic Sea.

The setting sun view was discovered through this little opening that led down to a cafe.

St Ignatius Church

What a contrast as the evening lights come on.

Our Airbnb hostess led us to a nice restaurant in Poljana R. Boskovica Square.

We enjoyed watching the lights of the old city come on at dusk.

The next morning we found our way back to the Stradum....Main Street through the Old  walled City.

Cats were everywhere....The residents of the Old City enjoyed having them  around.

Larry and I could totally understand the need for this machine...after the up hill climb from the night before, we realized how the businesses got their supplies uphill to residences and businesses.

Big Onofrio's Fountain....public water source in the Old Walled City

Orange trees

We paid  35 Euros to climb a bunchhhh or stairs to go up on the Old City Walls.

Early morning 9:00am on Stradun...the Main Street

11:00am on Stradun, the tourist traffic seemed to be picking up...This was a very popular place to tour.

A view into the newer neighborhoods of Dubrovnik

The Old City Wall was built upon natural rock structures rising up out of the sea.

Renovations are taking place in several areas.

The contrast between renovated and not renovated.

New roof and old roof

The city government pays for a bucket of corn to be spread to feed the pigeons everyday in Gundulic Square.
Everyday at noon, this has been going on for such a long time that the pigeons start gathering a little before noon and create a frenzy of  action as the corn is spread right before lunch time.

Cover your head cause you might catch a splat from the air above.

The wall was extremely thick!

Unrenovated area

Well protected marina

The orange-red roofs were a spectacular site across the Old Town of Dubrovnik

It took us about an hour to walk around the wall. Springtime was a pleasant time of year to do this.

Walking the Old City Dubrovnik Wall was a memorable experience.
