Rhodes, Greece

Rhodes, Greece                                                         April 2, 2017

Sun rise coming into Rhodes, Greece!

The ship came into port under a beautiful sunrise. Rhodes is the largest of all the Greek Isles in the Dodecanese.   Looking toward the city of Rhodes, our eyes feasted on a grand medieval fortification with its huge 12 meter stone wall enclosure. It was quite a sight to take in during breakfast.

Larry and I were happy to walk down the plank and out into the city to hop on a bus to take a quick ride around  the more modern side of Rhodes called the New Town.

After riding through a section of homes, churches, parks,  and government buildings, we topped the hill of Monte Smith to the Ancient City of Rhodes with the restored 2nd century tree lined stadium that once staged competitions in preparation for the Olympic Games.

The Acropolis of Rhodes sat on the very top of the hill…unfortunately it was being restored and was an unsightly mess of scaffolding.
We rode by the local beaches with the  nice sandy shores and  gorgeous azure waters.

We jumped off the bus and followed the cobblestone walkway through one of the nine main gates of the Old Town into the Knights Quarters.

My Knight.....on the right!

Spring is in the air....red buds a blooming!

Larry spotted this 1938 750 BMW....he was drooling.....
Greek Coffee....yes, but...

                                                         Baklava....OH MY STARS!!!

A past dignitary with my man......

This town is full of kitty-cats....and we found Glebe # 2.

We passed the Temple of Aphrodite, one of the few remaining ancient ruins in the Old Town.

We meandered through the narrow cobble stoned winding streets to find our way to the Clock Tower (1853) that crowned the city and.....

the Palace of the Grand Master..

We passed the pink domed Mosque of Suleyman (1522) built to commemorate the Ottoman victory against the knights.

Ending our day we enjoyed walking through the Hora area, a maze of Turkish style shops and cafes with several court yards.

Leaving the Great Walled Old City of Rhodes
                                                              Good bye cobblestone road....
Rhodes is such a lovely Greek city....do we have to go back to the ship?

We made it back for the 4:30 sail away. What a wonderful day…..visiting the Island of Knights.
