Rome, Italy

Rome, Italy                 Wednesday, February 12, 2020

We enjoyed a fine buffet breakfast before we walked back to the Civitavecchia Train Station for a little over an hour ride into Rome. It was great to watch the seaside pass by and then the many farms with large planted fields and dairy farms.

We found the bus terminal where there were eight different hop on bus companies. We choose one with the Panoramic Tour.

We passed St. Mary Major, one of the most ancient Basilicas of Christianity.  It had the highest bell tower in Rome.

Next we came upon the entrance into the Colosseum.

                                                   The Colosseum was simply spectacular!

We usedyour imagination to pretend to see the wooden flooring that covered the basement where the wild animals and gladiators were held.

The individual compartments in the basement are still standing. Archeologists were digging today. In the past they have found bones of wild animals and gladiators  in the same burial area.

                                                            Two happy history lovers

                                                        These stones were huge.

It’s hard to believe that the Colosseum could accommodate 50,000 people. There were special places for women, slaves, politicians, and men to sit.

                                                      Looking out from the Colosseum

Statues on the rooftops appeared everywhere in Rome.

When we came out of the Colosseum, Roman Police were everywhere....about 25 cars and these riders. Someone important must have been in the area.

After getting back on the bus we passed the Circo Massimo, a long field for events that supposedly accommodates 250,000 spectators.

The bridge to Vatican City and the Sistine Chapel...we enjoyed them both the last time we were in Rome.

Parking a Smart Car in Rome definitely takes up less room.

Barberini Fountain..... part man, part reptile

                                                                    Trevi Fountain

We enjoy coming to the Trevi Fountain every time we come to Rome. The last time we were here, it was getting a facelift. They certainly did a grand job of brightening it up. It’s Magnifico!

                                                    This gull enjoyed the fountain

We found our way back to the Roma Teriminal and caught the “graffiti” express back to Civitavecchia, stopping off at a little sidewalk cafe for dinner. We made it back to our hotel around  8 o’clock,  just in time to watch the movie, THE POST, before catching some ZZZZS. Another great day in Italy!
