Larry and I found the La Spezia Central Train Station and boarded it bright and early.
We were excited to ride the train through the Cinque Terre villages, but found that the ride was mostly through mountain tunnels.
We rode on to the little town of Chiavari where we caught another train that took us to Santa Margherita Liguria, the gateway to portofino.
We found bus 82 and boarded it to ride through the scenic seaside town of Santa Margherita with its fabulous little marina of boats and a fantastic walkway along the sea leading to Portafino.
As we approached Portofina we found a lush forest covering the hillsides dotted with millionaire villas and mansions above the seafront. It was so picturesque.
We understood why so many movie stars had found this quaint little hideaway, with its magnificent scenery.
The walk from the bus stop meandering through portofino’s quaint village.
At the foot of the mountain, tall colorful shops and residences hugged the serene bay with small boats harbored.
We walked along the marina area looking up at the churches on the hillside.
We spotted Brown Castle high up on the tip of the mountain’s edge and began our hike up to it.
The path started out paved but turned to a dirt footpath.
As we headed up the hill, we captured glimpses of the little village.
As we climbed we found this memorial that showed evidence of a recent movie star visiting the area. Puny Miroli is a local restaurant owner.
After arriving in the castle, Larry made me take a rest. I got to relax for a few minutes and experience the life of a queen.
We watched a great film about Portofino that showed many of the celebrities who have visited Portofino and Castle Brown.
The tiles in Brown Castle were intricate
An old hot water heater.....?
Portofino from Castle Brown...WHAT A VIEW!
The more recent modern addition to Brown Castle.
We arrived at the lighthouse and had a picnic lunch....watching the fishing boats return for the day.
We started to walk back to Portofino capturing views of the backside of Brown castle.
We passed this castle on the way down the hill...extremely unique paint job for a castle.
This little church is across from the colorful castle which looks over Portofino.
We enjoyed all the views of this little village.
We took the shuttle bus back to Santa Margherita where we captured the sunset before jumping on the train back to La Spezia. WHAT A WONDERFUL DAY!
