Cadiz, Spain

Cadiz, Spain April 3, 2013

We had a delicious breakfast and headed out to the city of Cadiz. Cadiz is on a peninsula jutting out to the bay. It is almost entirely surrounded by water. The city was found by the Phoenicians as a trading post in 1100 BC. It attained splendor during the 16th century when the explorers began the journey from here to the New World.

Larry and I had been here two years ago and enjoyed the day walking the rim of the peninsula along the waterfront. Today we walked through the narrow cobblestone streets which opened onto small squares. It was spitting rain. We stopped along the way and purchased two ponchos. It was surprising to hear Larry recall his Spanish to find and make the purchase. My man is so knowledgable about such things! At least it put a smile on my face to hear him speak Spanish.

The further we went into the city of narrow streets, the more the rain came down. We made it to the tower that we had planned to climb to take pictures, but it was beginning to pour rain. We decided to save the tower climb for another time and decided to find an internet cafe to get our blog updated. We enjoyed talking with the cafe owner and sitting in the big window cafe to watch the rain pour down while enjoying the internet. After about an hour the sun popped out and we went out to eat a little lunch while catching some rays. We moseyed on back to the Torre Tavira, the city' s official watchtower of 1778 and paid 10 Euros to climb the tower to the top to view the city.

We enjoyed a 20 minute program that took us on a magical trip of viewing the city on a white concave disk screen...it was like a moving panoramic view of Cadiz and it's bays. the speaker spoke in Spanish and English and made the whole discussion quite fun. When Larry saw the ship, he pointed and stated to everyone," Mi casa". Everyone roared with laughter. Afterwards we climbed more stairs to the top and enjoyed the outstanding view. I'm so glad we waited for the sun instead of attempting this during the rain. It was outstanding!

We next headed for the Cathedral and the great city wall that was built to keep out the sea, the wind and the pirates...OH MY! It brought back great memories of our last visit. We headed back to the ship at 5:30 just in time to set sail. What a great day'!
