Petermann Island, Antarctica January 14, 2016
See how our ship is dwarfed by the iceberg beside it....wow!
See how our ship is dwarfed by the iceberg beside it....wow!
On Thursday we boated over to Petermann Island,
first discovered by German whalers. A 1950’s era Argentine refuge rested on the
edge of the shoreline. We spotted Adelie
penguins, Gentoo penguins, and many elephant seals.
These fellers were following each other around...so cute!
So precious!!!
Also a cross commemorates three men who lost their lives in 1982 when they lost their way after a climbing expedition.
Penguin Path
Our afternoon was filled cruising Lemaire Channel spotting seals and whales along the way. What a sight! About ten Orka Whales circled an iceberg with an Elephant Seal laying on a ridge of the ice. They churned up the water waiting for the seal to go in, hoping for a tasty seal dinner. Although the ship’s captain circled and waited for about 45 minutes while the passengers gasped at the sights, we never saw the end for the seal…only in our imagination... and that was enough.
