Clearwater, Florida to Reno, Nevada to Lake Tahoe, California

Saturday, Jan 31- Sunday, Feb 8, to 2026

Our good friend, Darlene, took us to Tampa International Airport to catch a 9:15 flight on American Airlines to Dallas, Texas. From there we caught another American Airlines to Reno where we landed at 2:15 mountain time to meet Kathy and Chad for a ski adventure.

Cool sculpture in Reno Airport

Chad picked up the rental car since he and Kathy had arrived at 1:30. He loved comparing his longer beard 4 month growth  to Larry's trimmed up growth.

We headed to South Lake Tahoe, a little over an hour drive.  South Lake Tahoe, Nevada is refered to as Stateline while South Lake Tahoe, California is an incorporated city. There is a stark difference in landscapes. The Nevada side has casinos, restaurants, and hotels.....lots of lights while the California side has hiking paths, tall pines, and a more laid back jive.

Our home was a sweet three bed room, two bath cottage in South Lake Tahoe, California....

                       with a gas fire place...

                       and a nice galley kitchen.

Lake Tahoe is the largest alpine lake in North America.

Four days were spent at Heavenly....what  a mountain of trails in both Nevada and California!

Being two blocks from the lake led to some gorgeous walks.

Evenings were set aside for the hot tub in the quirky backyard and

playing and singing music. We also enjoyed watching the Winter Olympics in Italy and a movie, Last Flag Flying.

A fog usually rolled in during the evenings as the temperatures lowered into the 20's and 30's.

Sunsets were amazing.

Kathy came home with an injury the third day. One of the snow snakes grabbed her causing a complete face plant. She is an an expert skier so this took us all by surprise.

The fifth day of skiing was at
North Star. Larry enjoyed hitting the slopes.

Friday we decided to drive around the lake. Emerald Bay State Park was our first stop.

We enjoyed strolling around the area taking in the beauty that was in every direction.

It was blustery!

The waterfall was fabulous.

Pure joy!

Our birders spent two mornings spotting around 25 native birds.

Tahoe City had an incredible bear with two cubs...

covered in 203,000 pennies.

This statue was actually sculpted at the Burning Man Event and brought here for display.

We enjoyed walking the streets of the Town of Truckee. Not much had changed here since our last visit in 2014. It had an ole town, artsy atmosphere.

The old hotel was interesting. It reminded me of a hotel we went to in the middle of the night after a tornado dumped buckets of rain on us out in Kansas while on a motorcycle adventure with Gene Thompson and Mike Payne. This hotel had a unique cozy western bar.

We enjoyed wandering around the Truckee Museum.

This area developed around a lumbering business. Once the lumber dried up it became an ice block business. Refrigerators back then required a block of ice to keep things cool. The railroad arrived opening the area up to tourism. The rest is history...ski lodges, summer vacations, and nature lovers took over the area.

It was a very interesting little museum.

I loved this copper cash register displayed in the museum.

It was wonderful how the town has maintained its historical buildings. This 1950's gas station is a real estate office.

The Variety Store displayed antiques dating back to my childhood. The merchandise displays were exact memories of the way that Woolworth's and Rohr'spv Five and Dime in Manassas were when I was a child.

We thoroughly enjoyed our visit to Truckee.

Continuing on our drive around the lake, we enjoyed a gorgeous sunset.

What a great day!

Mornings were fun watching the chubby squirrels.

We left Lake Tahoe with some fabulously memories and the desire to come again.
