Muroran, Japan
At sunrise.....
Muroran is a sleepy town of about 100,000 residents. Being a
huge industrial port since 1930’s, it serves as the center for Japan’s steel
industry, It also has several cement factories, oil refineries and shipyards.
Windmill power on the mountainside
Picturesque hills surround the city making it the gateway to the mountainous northern part of Hokkaidao, Japan’s most northern island. Skiing and snowboarding in winter, hiking and cycling during the summer make this a year round destination. Interestingly, Knoxville, Tennessee is the sister city to Muroran.
We stopped at Cape Chikyu for a photo of the white lighthouse. We had sweeping 360 degree views of the sea, surrounding cliffs and the city.
On this most northern of the Japanese Islands (Hokkaido), spring was just about to bust loose...
Signs of winter were still around

We took the hop on bus for a 75 minute tour. These green jacket students greeted each bus stop to help give directions....and practice their English on us visitors.

We stopped at the foot of the Hakucho (Swan) Bridge, a
scenic suspension bridge completed in 1998.
Today was a blustery 40 degree’s type of day. The area was
just beginning to bust lose from winter with early spring daffodils and tulips.
We returned to the ship just in time for lunch and an
afternoon snooze. Ahhh…..
